
1. Your Breakers Trip Frequently
Circuit breakers are designed to shut off power when they detect an unsafe electrical condition. An occasional trip may happen when too many high-demand devices are being used at once.
However, frequent breaker trips may indicate:
- An overloaded circuit
- Damaged wiring
- A short circuit or ground fault
- A failing breaker
- Too few circuits for the home’s current electrical demand
Repeatedly resetting the breaker does not fix the underlying problem. An electrician can determine whether the circuit needs repair, additional capacity, or updated wiring.
2. Your Lights Flicker or Dim
A loose bulb or incompatible dimmer can cause one light to flicker. When flickering or dimming affects several rooms, occurs frequently, or happens when appliances turn on, the problem may involve the home’s wiring or electrical service.
Pay attention to lights that:
- Flicker throughout multiple rooms
- Dim when an appliance starts
- Become brighter or dimmer unexpectedly
- Buzz while operating
- Continue flickering after the bulb is replaced
Flickering does not automatically mean the entire home needs rewiring, but it should be inspected when it becomes persistent.
3. Outlets or Switches Feel Warm
Outlets, switches, and wall plates should not feel noticeably hot. Warmth may be caused by an overloaded circuit, a loose connection, damaged wiring, or a worn electrical device.
Stop using an outlet or switch if it is:
- Hot to the touch
- Discolored or scorched
- Buzzing, crackling, or sizzling
- Producing a burning smell
- Sparking during normal use
The Electrical Safety Foundation International identifies flickering lights, warm outlets, buzzing sounds, discoloration, and burning odors as potential signs of an overload or wiring problem.
4. Your Home Has Two-Prong Outlets
Two-prong outlets are commonly found in older homes and may indicate that the circuit does not contain an equipment-grounding conductor.
Simply replacing a two-prong outlet with a three-prong receptacle does not automatically create a grounded circuit. An electrician should evaluate the wiring and recommend the appropriate solution.
Depending on the existing system, the solution may involve:
- Updating the wiring
- Adding properly grounded circuits
- Installing approved GFCI protection
- Correcting improperly replaced receptacles
If three-prong outlets were installed in an older home without proper grounding, the outlets may appear updated while the wiring behind them remains unchanged.
5. You Rely on Extension Cords and Power Strips
Extension cords and power strips do not increase the amount of power a circuit can safely provide. They only allow more devices to be connected to the same circuit.
Consistently relying on them may mean the home does not have enough conveniently placed outlets or circuits for its current use.
Common examples include:
- Extension cords used as permanent wiring
- Several power strips in one room
- Multiple appliances connected to one outlet
- Cords running beneath rugs or furniture
- Adapters used because grounded outlets are unavailable
ESFI advises against using extension cords as a substitute for permanent wiring because cords can deteriorate and create shock or fire hazards.
6. The Wiring Is Old, Damaged, or Improperly Modified
The age of a home alone does not prove that it needs rewiring. However, older wiring systems should be evaluated—especially when there is visible damage, a history of renovations, or evidence of unpermitted electrical work.
Potential concerns may include:
- Brittle or deteriorated insulation
- Exposed or damaged wiring
- Improper junctions
- Buried junction boxes
- Mismatched wire sizes
- Loose connections
- Aluminum branch-circuit wiring
- Previous DIY electrical work
CPSC notes that wiring components can deteriorate over time and that some older systems may struggle to support the demands of modern appliances.
A licensed electrician can identify the wiring type, examine accessible connections, and determine whether the issue requires a targeted repair or more extensive replacement.
7. You Are Planning Major Electrical Upgrades
Older electrical systems may have worked adequately when homes used fewer appliances and electronic devices. Adding modern electrical loads can expose capacity limitations.
An evaluation is especially important before installing:
- An EV charger
- A hot tub
- Electric heating or cooling equipment
- A new kitchen appliance package
- Shop equipment
- Additional living space
- An outbuilding or accessory dwelling unit
- A generator or transfer equipment
The existing service, panel, circuits, and wiring should be evaluated before adding these loads. The answer may be a dedicated circuit, subpanel, service upgrade, partial rewire, or another solution based on the home’s actual condition.
Does an Older Home Automatically Need Rewiring?
Not necessarily. Some older homes have been properly maintained or updated over time, while others may contain a combination of original and newer wiring.
ESFI recommends considering an electrical inspection when a home is at least 40 years old, has undergone a major renovation, has had a large appliance added, or has recently changed ownership.
An inspection can help identify which components are still serviceable and which should be repaired or replaced.
Partial Rewiring vs. Whole-Home Rewiring
Not every electrical problem requires a complete rewire. Depending on the condition of the system, an electrician may recommend:
- Repairing a loose or damaged connection
- Replacing a worn outlet or switch
- Adding a dedicated circuit
- Rewiring one room or remodeled area
- Updating an electrical panel
- Replacing specific damaged circuits
- Rewiring most or all of the home
A professional evaluation helps determine the safest and most practical scope without replacing more than necessary.
When Should You Call an Electrician?
Schedule an inspection if you notice recurring breaker trips, flickering throughout multiple rooms, warm electrical devices, burning odors, buzzing, damaged wiring, or other unexplained changes.
Turn off the affected circuit and seek professional assistance promptly if you see smoke, sparks, melting, or signs of active overheating.
